A Definitive Guide to Our Aromatherapy Oils

New to aromatherapy? Chances are, you already know more than you think you do. Scent is naturally intuitive, and we all gravitate toward the scents that intrigue us. But we also know the world of essential oils, blending, and scent profiles can feel overwhelming, which is why we developed this simple user's guide to Palermo's collection of aromatherapy blends: Enlivening, Vitality, and Tranquility. We hope this can help you find that perfect companion to keep on your nightstand, carry in your pocket, or roll on before important meetings. And if you end up choosing all three, we certainly wouldn't blame you! Each has its own personality and is perfect for a different mood, situation, or time of day.

Why We Love Aromatherapy

Scent is powerful and has a significant impact on your mood and wellbeing. It is also closely tied to memory—think of where your mind goes when you smell pine trees, freshly baked cookies, the perfume your mother wears, or other evocative scents. Although some smells have a common effect on most people (ex. lavender, relaxing), everyone's memories and associations will be slightly different, making aromatherapy a very personal and unique experience. Additionally, aromatherapy takes a holistic approach to healing and wellness. Breathing in essential oils blends is not only pleasant, it can also have a therapeutic effect on the mental and physiological systems that help maintain equilibrium—heart rate, respiration, hormones, limbic (emotional) balance, and others. All this to say, in addition to smelling divine, aromatherapy plays an important role in engaging and soothing body, mind, and spirit.

Enlivening Oil

Aroma notes: Crisp, fresh, citrus, bright

She's perky! This refreshing blend of grapefruit, lemongrass, tea tree, peppermint, and other energizing oils makes a great pick-me-up any time of day. In addition to helping with energy, this blend was also formulated to help you focus and clear out the cobwebs. It can be a great cheerleader for long or tiring days—roll on when you feel a lull coming on or as a way to stay positive and refreshed during tedious tasks. It's also one of my favorite workout motivators! Enlivening's bright, "you can do it!" notes have helped me get off the couch to exercise many, many times. Lastly, peppermint oil can help with headaches, and the reputed antiseptic/antiviral properties in grapefruit and tea tree can help boost immunity. She's a helper, through and through. Keep this one in your pocket for any time you need clarity, motivation, or a touch of positivity.

Vitality Oil

Aroma notes: Floral, warm, earthy, woody, soft spice

The romantic. This complex blend of jasmine, sandalwood, cardamom, and other grounding oils is perfect for sparking creativity, curiosity, and confidence. It's full of rich, deep base notes, and it lingers on the skin for hours, making it double as a great natural perfume. This blend is transporting, mysterious, and inspiring—wearing it always makes me feel more in touch with the beautiful things in life. It's great for journaling and other creative projects, and it's a no-brainer for dates—it's basically a wink in a roller. Roll on when you want to feel a little bit fancy and for a touch of spirit and spontaneity.

Tranquility Oil

Aroma notes: Herbal, earthy, woody, soothing, aromatic

This one is a long-time best seller and staff favorite—for good reason. It's lavender-based, which everyone loves for relaxation, and rounded out with blue yarrow, cypress, and other woodsy oils that give it complex and soothing depth. The effect is, you guessed it, tranquil. Plus, it's blue! The color comes from the blue yarrow and is completely natural. This one also lingers on the skin for a while, so you can enjoy its relaxing benefits without having to worry about reapplying. Tranquility is a popular addition to self-care and bedtime routines, and can help soothe stress and anxiety. Roll on anytime you need to wind-down or remind yourself to take a deep breath. If you've ever dotted yourself with lavender oil before a yoga class, think of this as the ultimate upgrade.
